Saying ‘I Do’ Around the World

A look at winsome wedding couples in far-flung places

May 28, 2023

It’s a simple formula.  Go to beautiful places in front of beautiful backdrops and you’ll likely see beautifully attired people.  And some of those people happen to be celebrating the most beautiful day of their lives.

I’ve had the privilege to visit some spectacularly alluring places during my travels around the world.  So it’s not surprising that I’ve encountered lots of couples posing for their wedding photos — either before or after their ceremonies.

In some places like Eastern Europe, it’s customary for newlyweds to pose in front of statues depicting national heroes.  In other places, it might be a religious shrine, park or botanical garden (see the photo above taken in Chiang Mai, Thailand).  Whatever the backdrop, it’s always fascinating to see wedding couples wearing clothing illustrative of their rich and vibrant cultures.

Here you’ll find several of my favorite wedding photos.  I took all of these pictures in public places, often surrounded by other photographers.  I certainly hope I wasn’t intruding on anyone’s privacy (although the father in the wedding party I photographed in front of City Hall in Kaunas, Lithuania looks like he wants to kill me).

To the beautiful couples I photographed, I’ll pass along a quote from perhaps the most profound – and underrated — 20th century American philosopher: “You make me happier than I ever thought I could be and if you let me, I will spend the rest of my life trying to make you feel the same way.”

Well said, Chandler from “Friends.”  Wishing you, Monica, and all the wedding couples in the photos below all the best.

I photographed this bride and groom following their wedding ceremony at the 14th-century Cathedral of Santa Maria in Salamanca, Spain.

This couple was posing for their wedding pictures at an ancient Buddhist temple in Kampong Cham, Cambodia.

I love the traditional wedding costumes this couple is wearing in front of a blooming cherry-blossom tree in Fukuoka, Japan.

In Moldova, it’s customary for wedding couples — even on bitterly cold winter days — to pose in front of a statue of national hero Ștefan cel Mare (Stephen the Great).

Macau, formerly a Portuguese colony, is a Special Administrative Region of China.  The street sign next to the couple is in both Cantonese and Portuguese.

This couple is posing for pictures in front of the Freedom Monument in Riga, Latvia, a memorial to honor soldiers killed during the Latvian War of Independence (1918 – 1920).

The Peninsula Hotel is one of the most opulent hotels in Hong Kong.

This bridal party was posing for pictures outside the Great Synagogue of Rome (Tempio Maggiore di Roma).

Kauno Rotušė in Kaunas, Lithuania is the City Hall located in Kaunas’ main square.  The mother looked delighted to see me and the other photographers on the scene.  The father?  Not so much.
